This painting represents my first attempt at painting koi in watercolor. Using Indanthrone Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Pthalo Green, Quinacridone Magenta, Scarlet Lake, Permanent Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, and New Gamboge, this painting began painting in the lighter blues then layering the darker blues. Next I painted yellow, then the reds. When the sheen went off the paper I began using a brush to lift the fish shapes and at times used a makeup sponge to lift color.
Orange Slices Reworked
I wasn't pleased with the original painting seen in the bottom photo on the right so today I plopped it on the easel. I began by looking at the photos I took initially of the still life setup. I chose two photos as reference, incorporating the orange peel and deleting a couple of orange slices. The colors used for this painting were Winsor Yellow, Naples Yellow, Indian Yellow, Caput Mortuum, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Dioxazine Purple, Transparent Red Oxide. Titanium white was used last, mainly in the highlight areas and was mixed with ultramarine blue.
I am pleased with the composition but wonder a bit about the use of color, whether some of them need to be a bit more intense or less muted.
